  • Good to see them stand up for themselves. The selective and misleading account of their advice and the way they were singled out was appalling.

  • While Harbottle may well feel aggrieved by the press coverage relating to their role, and even the comments made by their client, it is difficult to see how making public comments like this are consistent with acting in the best interests of their clients. That duty remains, no matter how hurt one's feelings are or how badly behaved one's clients might have been.

  • Nonsense. The client significantly misrepresented the nature and context of advice given to a Parliamentary committee and which is also highly relevant to an ongoing police investigation.
Harbottle's haven't made public statements but rather gave their own account of events to the same committee, having been asked to do so. The committee then published it.
The duty to act in your clients interests is subject to, and overriden by, the public interest and the public interest in the administration of justice. Check the Solicitors Code of Conduct.

  • I do hope Harbottles will sue News International for defamation. I am aware of one potential entertainment client who said a couple of weeks ago that it wouldn't touch H & L after this story first broke.

  • This is no surprise. It seemed pretty obvious that, from the language used in the quotes taken from Harbottle's advice, their remit had been extremely narrow and not as was represented
