CC's Popham joins Citigroup as vice-chair of EMEA banking

One of the best known figures in the City, Popham was senior partner at the magic circle firm from 2002 until he stepped down at the end of last year to make way for Malcolm Sweeting. He had previously been the firm’s global finance and banking head.

Sweeting said: “This is a fantastic recognition for Stuart. We’re extremely proud to see him taking on such an important role at one of our most valued clients. We wish him the very best of luck in his new position.”

Citi had been one of Popham’s major clients when he was fee earning in the banking group. His main role at the bank will be to build its relationships with UK large-cap clients.

He brings an array of top-tier relationships, forged during his 34 years at Clifford Chance, as well as global expertise in finance and securities. This appointment is further evidence of Citi’s continued growth and ambition in the UK banking space.”

Popham will continue in his role as chairman of lobbying organisation TheCityUK - a position he took up in 2009. He is also a member of the CBI international advisory board and a council member of the Royal Institute for International Affairs.
