White & Case launches Beijing seat for trainees

White & Case has expanded its international trainee solicitor secondment programme to its Beijing office.
The international firm has introduced the six-month seat in a bid to broaden its current trainee secondment offering in Asia, which comprises Singapore, Hong Kong and Tokyo.
Graduate resourcing co-ordinator Shahnaz Begum said: “We’ve found through feedback that trainees really value their time overseas and when they get to associate level there is usually a much greater willingness to spend time in other jurisdictions. It gives them another dimension to their training contract and allows them to build informal networks at trainee level.”
Current White & Case trainees vying for the spot have until the end of September to complete their applications internally for an August 2011 start.
The news comes after Eversheds announced that it would be doubling the number of international seats it offers on its graduate programme, as reported by Lawyer2B.com in May (see story).
Historically, Eversheds has offered around five international seats to Paris, Hong Kong and Shanghai. But now the firm wants to double that number to 10 and include secondments to its offices in the Middle East and South Africa.
White & Case in one of very few firms that guarantees an overseas seat to all of its trainee solicitors. Secondments are available to Abu Dhabi, Almaty, Brussels, Frankfurt, Hong Kong, Johannesburg, Moscow, New York, Paris, Prague, Riyadh, Singapore and Tokyo.

I think White & Case is amazing to be able to guarantee an overseas seat to all its trainees. What a fantastic opportunity.
The ability to go to one of the Asian offices, now including Beijing, would be particularly useful - it is becoming increasingly clear that, in this current economic climate, more and more businesses are turning to Asia, and law firms are following suit.

The attitude of the US firms to their international presence and attention paid to overseas clients is light years ahead of the traditional London-based "international" practices. This is why US firms are increasingly dominating both the London and international scene, and will continue to do so until their London-based rivals wake up and become a bit more animated.
