Indian firm Amarchand & Mangaldas & Suresh A Shroff & Co has turned to the UK legal market for the hire of a chief operating officer (COO) for the Mumbai region.
Valerie Bowles, who was previously chief executive at northern firm Langleys Solicitors, joined the Mumbai office today (23 November).
Bowles will report directly to Amarchand managing partner Cyril Shroff, who said the firm would benefit from having her Western perspective.
“This is part of putting a modernisation team in place to move the firm forward,” said Shroff. “We identified some senior appointments that we wanted to make and we’re looking to secure some of those appointments not just from India, but from other markets too.”
Shroff said the firm hopes to make further appointments in the coming months, some of which will be fee-earners.
As revealed by The Lawyer earlier this month (9 November) the firm hired A&L Goodbody EU and competition associate Paku Khan as director of competition.
Bowles, who will be COO for Amarchand’s offices in Mumbai, Hyderabad and Bangalore, will take control of support functions in the region.
As revealed by The Lawyer earlier this year (23 February), Amarchand’s modernisation began when the firm took the unusual step of converting to a full lockstep model. Prior to that the firm operated an eat-what-you-kill system, whereby a small number of founding partners and family members owned a large proportion of the equity.
