Teacher Stern Selby has advised on footballer Carlos Tevez’s transfer to Manchester City FC.
Teacher Stern partner Graham Shear led a team advising Tevez’s agent Kia Joorabchian on the deal, which concluded last week.
Shear said: “From a regulatory and commercial view, this was at times an incredibly challenging matter. But all those involved, including the FA, the Premier League and Manchester City, worked hard to deal with any issues in an efficient and often collegiate manner. Definitely a case to remember.”
The deal comes after the issue of third-party ownership of sportspeople in the UK has been battled out in the courts.
In 2007 The Lawyer reported (17 August 2007) that Denton Wilde Sapte partner John Rosenheim represented Sheffield United FC in arbitration proceedings against West Ham United FC over the Argentine footballer. Ian Mill QC of Blackstone Chambers was instructed.
Former Travers Smith partner John Kingston, instructing Jim Sturman QC of 2 Bedford Row and Paul Harris of Monckton Chambers, advised West Ham.
Sheffield United is claiming damages for breach of contract, arguing that West Ham acted dishonestly in registering Tevez and fellow player Javier Mascherano by failing to reveal that the players were owned by a third party.
