The Thames Valley law firm has pulled the plug on its summer vacation scheme and is not accepting any applications for training contracts until 2010. Furthermore, the firm will not be considering any application forms that have already been submitted. The deadline for vacation schemes was 30 April.
A message on Morgan Cole’s graduate recruitment website from the firm’s training principal Guy Constant reads: “This decision was not taken lightly and we are all too well aware of the time and effort it takes for you to complete and submit the application form. Please therefore accept our sincere apologies for this news.
Until we are in a better position to ascertain the implications and length of this current climate we have made the decision to focus our investment on our current trainees, our NQ’s for this year and of course those trainees due to join us this September, thus resulting in the closure of this year’s assessment centre.”
Morgan Cole is not deferring any trainees who are due to join the firm later this year or in 2010.
Morgan Cole is the latest in a string of firms to pull the shutters on its graduate recruitment programme the latest being Eversheds and Field Fisher Waterhouse.

I think that is out of order. Candidates spend hours upon hours completing an application form.

I think it has been handled in the most appalling way. Having submitted an application form, a form which I have to say was one of the more demanding I've completed, only to be told on the deadline date that it won't be considered is shocking.
The fact applicants were not told until deadline day suggests to me that it was an idea the firm had been contemplating, but then simply panicked and made the decision in time for the deadline.

An email was circulated from them about a week or two ago, not exactly last minute but still not far off the deadline.

I think that is out of order. Candidates spend hours upon hours completing an application form.
At least they are being honest. They could have simply rejected the applications and not say anything and nobody would have found out.
